Why Babies and Kids Get Ear Infections More Often (And When It May Need a Closer Look)

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons parents bring their child in for evaluation—but while occasional ear infections can be common, chronic or recurring ear infections should not simply be written off as “normal.” Ear infections can also sometimes be a sign of an underlying issue needing attention.

In this video, we explain some of the reasons babies and young children may be more prone to experiencing ear infections, especially recurring ones. Importantly, ear infections are especially frequent in early childhood due to several factors.

One of the biggest reasons is anatomy. In infants and younger children, the eustachian tubes (the drainage pathways between the middle ear and the throat) are typically more horizontal, which can make it easier for fluid to become trapped. As children grow, those tubes become more vertical, which often helps fluid drain more efficiently. Notably, this structural difference contributes to ear infections being more prevalent in young children. Thus, anatomy is a key factor in the development of ear infections.

We also discuss how teething and inflammation in the gums or mouth may contribute to irritation and pressure around the area, which may affect how well the ear drains. This connection highlights another factor in child ear infections.

Beyond anatomy alone, there can be several other contributing factors that may increase a child’s susceptibility to recurring ear infections, including:

  • airway development
  • oral ties
  • allergies
  • gut-related inflammation
  • upper neck tension and nervous system regulation

In some children, tension or restriction in the upper neck may also affect surrounding tissues and the body’s ability to regulate inflammation and drainage efficiently. All these factors can potentially increase the likelihood of ear infections occurring.

The goal isn’t to say there is one single cause for every child—it’s that recurrent ear infections often deserve a broader look at the whole child, not just the ears. For parents, awareness about ear infections and their underlying causes is crucial. Additionally, understanding ear infections in children can help you identify when medical care is needed.
