Stiff neck when you look down? 👇
Here are 5 exercises to help improve neck flexion and move more comfortably.
The goal is to gradually improve mobility, control, and strength through the range of motion.
During normal neck flexion, the cervical spine should slowly flex segment by segment while the head moves forward and down. This requires coordinated motion through the cervical joints, activation of our deep cervical neck flexors, along with lengthening of the muscles and soft tissues along the back of the neck.
One common compensation is pushing our chin forward first and then relying more on our upper cervical spine and surrounding areas instead of retracting our chin first and then smoothly flexing through our neck.
You may still be able to “look down,” but that doesn’t mean you have good cervical flexion.
So try these exercises slowly and see if you either notice an improved range of motion after doing these exercises or less muscular pain/strain as you look down.
